Remember folks, the higher the Gauge (AWG), the smaller the cable. A lot of manufacturers add a lot of insulation to prevent you from being able to see the wire size directly to hide this, or they may put the gauge number in big bold letters to make it appear more robust, but they are not usually allowed to tell you it is one size when it is not. If you find cables that are misleading, or cables that don’t even have a sizing, please send us a link to them in the comments section and we’d be happy to put them on blast in our next article after some investigating.
The smaller your conductor, the longer you will be stuck waiting for your battery to reach a good enough level to jump. Dinky jump cables don’t have enough ampacity (is that a word? amperage bandwith?) for you to be able to start your engine directly from the jumpers, but a high quality set that is thicker will have a better chance.
